Expanders are fittings that allow you to increase the original size of another push to connect fitting. Plug-in expanders can be used to increase the port size on a manifold if you're looking to increase your air line size without purchasing a whole new unit. An unequal unions allows you to increase the air line size at any point throughout the system.
